Samhain falls on 31st October into 1st November, the night the Gaelic calendar turned from autumn to winter. People believed the boundary with the Otherworld grew thin, and that a disguise kept you hidden from anything unkind that crossed over. This home education session plan marks that night the old way, with lanterns, masks and firelight.
Centred on the original folklore story The Night the Fires Went Out, in which a girl called Freya lets her family’s fire die and carries a new flame home from the village bonfire, this session invites children to look for what has fallen and what still holds its colour, carve a turnip lantern, make a guising mask like Freya’s fox, bake apples in the embers with warm spiced apple juice, and close by watching a flame.
Designed for home educators and parents working with their own children or small mixed-age groups. Activities are open-ended and adaptable, invitations rather than instructions. No forest school setting required.
Includes: full session guide, activity prompts and reflections, two fireside recipes, resource list, and the complete folklore story.
