The autumn equinox falls around 23rd September, when day and night stand equal before the darker half of the year begins. Blackberries still hang in the hedge, rose hips and haws are swelling, and swallows gather on the wires before they leave for warmer climates. This home education session plan marks that balance outdoors, at your own pace.
Centred on the original folklore story The Last Patch, this session invites children to spot rowan, blackberry, and rose hips on a walk, plait a corn dolly from grass or wheat stalks, build it a seasonal space from fallen leaves and bark, cook Blackberry and Apple Compote over a fire or camping stove, and close with a shared listening moment as the light changes.
Designed for home educators and parents working with their own children or small mixed-age groups. Activities are open-ended and adaptable, invitations rather than instructions. No forest school setting required.
Includes: full session guide, activity prompts, conversation starters, resource list, and the complete folklore story.
