Litha falls on or around 21st June, the longest day and the turning point of summer. The elder is in flower, meadowsweet scents the damp verges, and somewhere around midnight the year turns almost too quietly to notice. From today, the days begin to shorten. In the old calendar this was Midsummer, a fire festival, a day of paradox: the sun at its highest also marks the beginning of its retreat. This KS2 session plan explores that idea outdoors, through story, observation, and making.
Centred on the original folklore story The Night the Sun Stood Still, the session moves children through a welcome circle and perimeter walk noticing seasonal signs, the folklore story with discussion questions on belief, change, and why this moment has mattered to people across cultures, a golden hunt and sun pattern from natural materials, turmeric dyeing on fabric, Midsummer Apple Rings cooked at the fire, and a mindfulness close. Includes a welcome and goodbye song, detailed SEND adaptations, and full KS2 curriculum links.
