A Winter Solstice session plan for KS1, designed to support outdoor learning through exploration of light and dark, seasonal change, tradition and kindness.
The session weaves together folklore, creative activity and mindful observation, using the story The Returning Light to introduce the idea of the longest night and the gradual return of daylight. Children are invited to take part in lantern-making, light and shadow exploration, shared food, and quiet moments of reflection.
The plan includes clear session structure, optional fire-based activities where appropriate, and practical guidance to support inclusion, emotional regulation and participation for children with SEND.
