A Winter Solstice session plan for KS2, designed for outdoor learning settings and focused on turning points in the year, light and darkness, tradition and community.
The session uses folklore, discussion and hands-on activity to explore why people have historically marked the Winter Solstice, and how communities responded to the longest night. Activities encourage observation, reflection and symbolic thinking through lantern-making, ground-based markers and shared seasonal food.
The plan includes structured opportunities for discussion, quiet mindfulness, and reflection on warmth, resilience and belonging, with curriculum links and SEND adaptations included.
